Eat the right fuel for your goals.

Would you put rocket fuel in your Fiat? Likewise, would you put 87 octane in your F18? I guess you could but I wouldn’t expect them to run the same after that. The fuel you use determines how your engine runs. Too little fuel and you run out of gas. Too much and you have to store it in the trunk (or wherever you store your fuel). Most importantly, the find of fuel you use is just as important. The same can be said for your strength and physique goals.…

German Volume Training- What is it?

Everyone has heard of German chocolate cake. And German beer is one of my favorite things in the world. But there’s one more German export that any red blooded gym rat should know. GVT (German Volume Training) is a training program that you either love or hate. This program is geared toward hypertrophy and uses “only” 60% of your 1RM to start. I put only in quotations because it comes with a twist. You have to perform 10 sets of 10 reps with that weight. This might seem like…

The deadlift- Picking things up and putting them down.

Pick things up and put them down. Seems easy enough. This simple move is one of the most powerful moves in weight training. It is the best way to show your brute strength and power. Being able to rip 2-3 times your bodyweight off the floor is one of the most impressive things you can do. Holding on to a bar with all your might, squeezing it until your knuckles turn white, standing up with every muscle of your body shaking to finish the move is the reason we all…

What does everybody do on a Monday? Bench press, of course.

Go into a gym on any Monday during the year and you see lines of gym goers waiting on the few benches on the gym floors. For most people, the bench press is a right of passage for anyone who has touched a barbell. Some people say that it’s a waste of time. No matter what side you’re on, we can all agree that watching someone press 2 times their body weight with good form is an impressive sight.   When you’re under a heavy bench, every part of your body…

What should I eat to be healthy?

The thorn in everybody’s side when they start to get healthy is their diet. If you ask people to plan their day filled with food from their favorite restaurants they’d come up with a list faster than you can say “diabetes”. Ask those same people to plan a healthy meal and they’ll get temporary amnesia. It seems like people nowadays have a hard time comprehending what exactly make up a healthy diet. With all the variety of processed food and the number of restaurants popping up around town it’s no…

YouTube training update

Here are Saturday and Tuesday’s training sessions. I’ve been making it a habit to get out of the gym fast. If I don’t keep moving or if I sit down, my workouts take forever. This keeps my heart pumping and I can get to work on time. Don’t forget to sign up for updates on the ebook I’m writing. Here’s the link. If you need a good protein, this is the one that I use. Enjoy the videos. Saturday 10/21/17- Squats and deadlifts. Read my squat article here. Tuesday 10/24/17-…

This classic strongman movement will get you superhuman strength.

There’s nothing that says “strongman” more than lifting something over your head. Tune into ESPN and watch the World’s Strongest Man and you’ll see an overhead event for sure. And I would bet a steak dinner that that is the event the separates the men from the boys. This move is a lot harder than it looks, but the return (aka gains) are well worth it. With all the variations of this exercise, it can (and should) fit into everyone’s workout routine. And of done correctly, you’ll wonder if you…

Why should you squat?

The squat is arguably the king of all exercises. You could make an argument for the deadlift but we can discuss that later. Being a major compound movement, the squat works your entire body and should be at the core of any strength training routine. Whether you’re trying to lose fat, gain muscle or gain strength (two different training schemes), the squat is a key component for all of these goals. It’s a basic movement in everyday life and if you program it correctly, it can save you a lot…
